Silica litter

Silica crystal litter traps liquid inside the crystals and controls odour for weeks; its light weight and long life make it a practical choice for smaller homes.

Silica litter is made of micro-porous silicon dioxide crystals. Urine is absorbed into the crystals, moisture evaporates and odour is held in; unlike bentonite, it does not clump. Because it can absorb several times its own weight in liquid, the same volume lasts longer, and the bags are easy to carry.

How to use silica litter

  • Fill the tray to about 3–4 cm; adding more does not make it last longer.
  • Remove solids every day, then stir the crystals with a scoop so moisture spreads evenly.
  • Replace the whole tray when the crystals turn yellow or you notice a smell; for one cat this is usually every three to four weeks.

The main advantages of silica are odour control and very low dust. On the other hand, some cats dislike the feel of hard, large crystals under their paws; a fine-grain silica, or a gradual mix with bentonite, is a good way to start. Where several cats share a box, the crystals saturate faster and need changing more often.

Colour-changing indicator silica can help you notice shifts in urine pH, but it is not a diagnostic tool, so consult your vet if you are concerned. For kittens, silica is generally recommended only once they are a few months old, as they may otherwise put crystals in their mouths.

Common questions about Silica litter

Does silica litter clump?

No, silica absorbs liquid into the crystals. You remove solids, stir the litter and replace it entirely at regular intervals.

Is silica litter safe for cats?

Amorphous silica gel is considered non-toxic and very low in dust. Still, for kittens inclined to eat litter, bentonite or plant-based litter is a safer choice.

How do I switch from bentonite to silica?

Add a small amount of silica to the existing litter in the first week and increase the ratio over a few days. Or set two trays side by side and see which your cat chooses.
