Clumping bentonite litter

Bentonite litter forms firm clumps the moment it meets liquid, is cleaned with a daily scoop and offers the texture most cats accept most readily.

Bentonite is a natural clay that swells when it absorbs water. In cat litter this means urine forms a tight clump before it can seep to the bottom of the tray; you scoop out only the soiled part and the rest stays clean. That is why bentonite is the first choice for owners who want economical use and easy monitoring.

What to look for in bentonite litter

  • **Clumping strength:** good litter lifts out in one piece on the scoop. Crumbling clumps leave odour behind.
  • **Dust level:** "low dust" or "99% dust-free" matters for cats with sensitive airways and for the people they live with.
  • **Grain size:** fine grains clump more tightly and feel natural to cats; coarser grains are tracked round the house less.
  • **Odour:** litters with activated carbon neutralise smells without perfume. Heavily scented litters can put some cats off the tray.

Fill the tray to a depth of at least 5–7 cm; too thin a layer lets clumps stick to the base. Scoop daily, top up what you remove, and empty and wash the tray with warm water every two to three weeks. Do not flush clumps down the toilet, as bentonite can block pipes; bin them instead.

Young kittens may taste litter in their first weeks, so a coarser or plant-based litter can be worth considering at that stage. If you buy litter regularly, autoship gives you 5% off.

Common questions about Clumping bentonite litter

Can bentonite litter be flushed?

No. Bentonite swells with water and can block pipes. Bag the clumps and put them in your household rubbish.

How long does a bag of bentonite litter last?

In a single-cat home a 10-litre bag usually lasts three to four weeks with daily scooping. With more cats it goes proportionally faster.

Should I choose scented or unscented bentonite?

Cats have a very keen sense of smell, so unscented or activated-carbon litters are usually better accepted. Use a scented one only if your cat is happy with it.
