Dry food is the backbone of most dogs' diets thanks to its convenience and value. A good dry food is formulated to be "complete and balanced", supplying all the protein, fat, vitamins and minerals a dog needs on its own. Start with breed size: small breed recipes have smaller kibble and higher energy density, while large breed recipes often add glucosamine and chondroitin for joint support.
Weighing portions on a kitchen scale is far more reliable than guessing; scoop measurements can be out by as much as 20%. If you give treats, keep them to 10% of daily calories and trim the kibble accordingly. A dog on dry food should always have fresh, clean water available.
When changing food, mix old and new over 7–10 days, shifting the ratio gradually. For large breeds, 12–15 kg sacks are the most economical, but choose a size you will finish within about six weeks of opening to keep it fresh. Add your regular food to autoship to save 5% on every delivery.
Yes. Soaking in lukewarm water for 10–15 minutes helps weaning puppies, older dogs with dental problems or dogs that drink little. Serve soaked food within a few hours and don't leave it standing in the bowl.
Large breed foods have bigger kibble and controlled calorie and calcium levels, and most include joint-supporting ingredients. This helps limit rapid weight gain and strain on the joints.
Lift the bowl after 15–20 minutes and wait for the next meal without offering treats in between. A spoonful of wet food on top can tempt them. If poor appetite lasts more than a day or comes with vomiting, see your vet.
