Large-breed dogs put heavy loads on their joints and bones throughout life. Large-breed formulas therefore usually add joint support such as glucosamine and chondroitin, keep fat moderate for weight control and use bigger kibble that slows eating. Bigger kibble makes gulping harder, which also helps reduce the risk of bloat (GDV).
In large-breed puppies, excess calcium and energy can make bones grow too fast and lead to joint problems. Always choose a food labelled for large-breed puppies and move to the adult formula between 15 and 24 months, depending on the breed.
Split the daily amount into two meals and avoid strenuous exercise just before or after eating. Working dogs such as Kangals may need larger portions to match their activity; being able to feel the ribs under light pressure is a good sign of ideal condition.
