Small breeds have a fast metabolism: they need more energy per kilo than large breeds, yet have small stomachs. Small-breed foods are therefore more energy-dense and use mini kibble, so a modest portion meets their needs and small mouths can chew comfortably.
Tartar and gum problems are common in small dogs. Foods with kibble that cleans the tooth surface mechanically, or ingredients such as sodium tripolyphosphate that reduce tartar, are helpful. Because these breeds tend to live long lives, formulas with antioxidant support are also worth considering.
Splitting the daily amount into at least two meals, or three for very small dogs, helps prevent dips in blood sugar. Keep treats under 10% of daily calories; in a small dog even a few extra treats quickly show up as extra weight.
