Grain-free dog foods are chosen for dogs sensitive to grains such as wheat and maize, or for those with delicate digestion. Potato, sweet potato, peas or chickpeas provide the carbohydrate, and many recipes contain more meat and fish.
When choosing, look for named animal proteins at the top of the ingredient list. Very high pulse content in some grain-free recipes has been debated, so it is sensible to favour meat-rich formulas that do not rely on legumes near the top of the list, and to keep up regular vet check-ups for heart health.
Move to a new food over 7–10 days: replace a quarter of the old food at first, then half, then three-quarters. Grain-free foods are often calorie-dense, so adjust portions to your dog’s target weight and daily activity.
