A terrarium should be a small-scale copy of your reptile’s natural habitat. The right size, ventilation and layout let the animal regulate its temperature, hide when it wants and live without stress. Before choosing, find out the species’ adult size, whether it lives on the ground or in trees, and how much humidity it needs.

Species and terrarium type

  • Ground dwellers (leopard geckos, bearded dragons, tortoises): wide, low terrariums. An adult bearded dragon needs at least 120×60×60 cm.
  • Arboreal species (chameleons, crested geckos): tall, vertical and well-ventilated models.
  • Aquatic turtles: a tank at least 4–5 times the shell length, with a basking area.

Front-opening doors let you reach in from the front rather than from above, which is less stressful because it does not mimic an approaching predator. A metal mesh top is needed both for ventilation and for mounting lamps.

Substrate also depends on the species. A sand–soil mix or slate tiles suit desert species, while coconut fibre suits those that need humidity. Avoid loose fine sand for juveniles, as swallowing it while feeding can cause impaction.

Every terrarium needs a hide at both the warm and cool ends, a shallow water dish and something to climb. Plan heating and UVB lighting as an integral part of the set-up rather than an afterthought.

Common questions about Terrariums

What size terrarium does a leopard gecko need?

At least 90×45×45 cm (about 180 litres) for one adult; bigger is always better.

Can I use a fish tank as a terrarium?

For aquatic turtles, yes. For land species, ventilation is poor and top access is stressful, so a front-opening mesh-topped terrarium is better.

How often should a terrarium be cleaned?

Remove droppings and leftovers daily and refresh water every day. Replace the substrate fully every 1–3 months and wipe down with a reptile-safe disinfectant.
