Regular grooming is not just about looks: it helps you spot skin problems, parasites and dental issues early. A short brushing session a few times a week strengthens your bond and noticeably reduces the amount of hair around the house.

Choosing a brush by coat type

  • **Short coats (Labrador, Beagle):** A rubber grooming mitt or bristle brush lifts dead hair easily.
  • **Long, silky coats (Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese):** A fine-toothed comb and pin brush prevent tangles and mats.
  • **Double coats (Golden Retriever, Husky, Kangal):** An undercoat rake is essential, especially during the heavy spring and autumn moults.

Only use shampoo made for dogs with a suitable pH; human shampoo can dry the skin and cause itching. For most dogs a bath once a month is plenty. Oatmeal or hypoallergenic formulas suit sensitive or flaky skin, while conditioners help dogs that are bathed often.

If you can hear nails clicking on the floor, they need trimming; cut a little at a time to avoid the quick, or use a nail grinder. Dog-specific toothpaste with a finger brush is the best start for slowing tartar build-up; never use human toothpaste, which may contain xylitol. Check ears weekly and see your vet if you notice a bad smell or redness.

Common questions about Grooming & Hygiene

How often should I bath my dog?

For most dogs, once a month is enough. Bathing too often strips the skin’s natural oils; use dry shampoo or grooming wipes in between.

Can I use human shampoo on my dog?

No. Dog skin has a different pH, and human shampoo can cause dryness, itching and flaking. Choose a dog-specific formula.

How do I clean my dog’s teeth?

Brush a few times a week with dog toothpaste and a finger brush. Dental chews and chew toys also help reduce plaque.
