Choosing the right dog food starts with weighing up your dog's age, breed size and daily activity together. A Golden Retriever puppy and a seven-year-old Maltese have very different needs for energy, protein and minerals, so use the "puppy", "adult", "senior" and "small/medium/large breed" labels on the bag as your first filter.

What to look for on the label

  • **First ingredient:** a named animal protein such as chicken, lamb or salmon.
  • **Crude protein and fat:** higher for active dogs, more moderate for dogs prone to weight gain.
  • **Calcium/phosphorus balance:** critical for bone development, especially in large breed puppies.
  • **Feeding table:** work out the daily portion from your dog's target weight, not its current one.

Dry food helps clean the tooth surface mechanically, keeps well once opened and is more economical per gram. Wet food boosts water intake and tempts fussy eaters. Many owners mix the two; if you do, reduce the dry portion so the total calories stay on target.

When switching food, spread the change over 7–10 days: start by replacing a quarter of the old food with the new one and increase the share gradually. Common questions about Food

How much food should my dog eat per day?

Read the feeding table on the bag against your dog's ideal weight and split the daily amount into two meals for adults. Adjust by about 10% for activity and body condition; if you can feel the ribs with light pressure, the portion is right.

Is grain-free food better for every dog?

No. Grain-free food suits dogs with a grain sensitivity, but a good-quality food with grains is equally balanced for a healthy dog. If you have any concerns about heart health, talk to your vet.

How should I store an opened bag of food?

Keep the food in its original bag, tightly closed, in a cool, dry place; placing the bag inside an airtight bin is best. Choose a pack size you will finish within 4–6 weeks of opening.
