Puppies multiply their birth weight many times over in their first year, and that rapid growth demands more protein, energy and carefully balanced minerals than adult food provides. Puppy recipes also add DHA for brain and eye development and antioxidants to support the immune system. The golden rule is to choose a puppy food matched to your dog's expected adult weight.

Why breed size matters

Large and giant breed puppies (over 25 kg as adults) can develop hip and elbow problems if they grow too fast, so large breed puppy foods carefully control calories and calcium. Small breed puppies, on the other hand, have a fast metabolism and need tiny, energy-dense kibble that fits their small stomachs. Never add extra calcium to a puppy food; it upsets the balance.

Meal frequency changes with age:

  • 2–4 months: 4 meals a day
  • 4–6 months: 3 meals a day
  • from 6 months: 2 meals a day

When to move to adult food also depends on size: small breeds at 9–12 months, medium breeds at about 12 months, and large and giant breeds at 15–24 months. Always spread the switch over 7–10 days. Sticking with the food your puppy ate at the breeder or shelter for the first weeks eases digestion; make any change once they have settled into their new home.

Common questions about Puppy food

Can I feed my puppy adult food?

It isn't recommended. Adult food doesn't provide the energy, protein and minerals needed for growth. Foods labelled "for all life stages" are an exception, but large breed puppies are still better off on a large breed puppy food.

How do I know if my puppy is eating too much?

A puppy should look sturdy rather than round; the ribs shouldn't be visible but should be easy to feel. Weigh weekly and check the gain follows the manufacturer's growth curve.

When should I stop feeding puppy food?

Small breeds move to adult food at 9–12 months, medium breeds at about 12 months and large or giant breeds at around 15–24 months. Neutering can affect growth and energy needs, so discuss timing with your vet.
