A collar or harness is the most important safety link between you and your dog. The right choice depends on your dog’s build, how much they pull and where you walk. Even dogs who wear a harness should have a light collar for an ID tag.

Collar or harness?

  • **Collar:** Ideal for trained dogs who walk nicely on the lead, and for carrying an ID tag.
  • **Harness:** Spreads pressure away from the neck and windpipe in dogs who pull; the first choice for flat-faced breeds such as Pugs and French Bulldogs, and for small breeds. Front-clip harnesses help reduce pulling.
  • **Retractable lead:** Gives freedom in open spaces, but a fixed-length lead is safer on busy streets and during training.

To size a collar, measure the neck and add two fingers’ width; when fitted, two fingers should slide comfortably underneath. For a harness, measure the chest just behind the front legs. Puppies grow quickly, so adjustable designs are both safer and better value.

Woven nylon is light and easy to wash, leather lasts for years, and reflective stitching improves visibility on evening walks. Check buckles and the lead clip regularly: worn stitching or a loose buckle is the most common cause of escapes.

Common questions about Collars & Leads

My dog pulls a lot. Which harness should I use?

A harness with a front (chest) clip naturally reduces pulling. Use it alongside reward-based training rather than choke chains.

How do I find the right size?

Measure the neck with a soft tape and add two fingers’ width; for a harness, measure the chest behind the front legs and compare with the size chart.

Are retractable leads safe?

They are fine for controlled use in parks and open spaces. On busy roads, in crowds and with untrained dogs, a fixed-length lead is the safer choice.
