Cats are obligate carnivores: they get most of their energy from animal protein and fat. So when you choose a food, start with the first few lines of the ingredient list. A clearly named meat source such as chicken, turkey, salmon or lamb should come first, and taurine plus omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids should always be included.
Many vets recommend feeding dry and wet food together. Giving most of the daily calories as dry food and one meal as wet food is a good balance for both dental surfaces and kidney and urinary health. Work out the total from the feeding table on the pack and adjust it to your cat's weight.
Take your time when changing food. Mix the new food into the old one gradually over 7–10 days, starting at roughly a quarter and increasing every few days. Sudden switches can cause vomiting, diarrhoea or food refusal. Add the food you buy regularly to autoship and you get 5% off every delivery, without ever running out.
For adult cats, splitting the daily amount into 2–3 meals is ideal. Kittens should have 3–4 small meals a day until they are six months old.
Not always. Grain-free food is a good option for cats sensitive to grains, but what matters most is high-quality animal protein and balanced nutrition.
Sealed tightly and kept somewhere cool and dry, dry food stays fresh for 4–6 weeks. Storing a large bag in an airtight container keeps the aroma longer.
