Wet food is roughly 75–80% water. Cats, which in the wild get most of their moisture from prey, tend to drink little, so wet food is one of the easiest ways to support urinary and kidney health. Its strong aroma and texture also make it a good choice for cats with poor appetite, seniors and cats recovering from illness.

Choosing a texture

  • **Pâté:** easy to eat for kittens, seniors and cats with dental problems.
  • **Chunks in jelly:** a favourite for many cats, and the jelly adds moisture.
  • **Chunks in gravy:** less suitable for cats that lick off the gravy and leave the pieces.

Always check whether a wet food is "complete" or "complementary". Complete foods meet all nutritional needs on their own; complementary products should be used as a treat or topper. If you feed it alongside dry food, reduce the dry portion so you do not exceed the daily calorie total; as a rule of thumb, one 85 g pouch equals about 15–20 g of dry food.

Keep opened tins covered in the fridge and use them within 24–48 hours. Cats dislike cold food, so let it come to room temperature before serving. Throw away wet food left out for more than 30 minutes and wash the bowl after every meal.

Common questions about Wet food

Can I feed my cat only wet food?

Yes, as long as the products are labelled "complete". You just need to plan for the cost and for dental care.

My cat only licks the gravy. What should I do?

Try pâté or jelly textures; lightly mashing the chunks can also help. If it continues, a dental check is worthwhile.

Should I warm wet food?

Bringing food from the fridge to room temperature is enough. If you use a microwave, stir well to make sure there are no hot spots.
