Dry food is the most practical foundation of a cat's diet: it keeps for a long time, is easy to portion and costs less per gram than wet food. But not all dry foods are equal, and the most important quality marker is the protein source and level.
Calculate the portion from the feeding table using your cat's ideal weight, not its current weight. Most indoor cats maintain their weight at the lower end of the range. Weighing food on kitchen scales is far more accurate than filling the bowl by eye.
Cats fed on dry food need to drink enough water. Placing the food bowl away from the water bowl, offering several water stations or using a fountain all increase intake. Adding one wet meal a day also supports urinary health. When moving to a new dry food, follow a gradual 7–10 day transition.
For cats prone to weight gain or sterilised cats, weighing the daily amount and splitting it into meals is healthier. Free-feeding only suits cats that regulate their own weight.
The price per kilo is lower, but choose a size you will finish within 4–6 weeks of opening. For one cat, 2–4 kg is usually ideal.
Crunchy kibble helps clean tooth surfaces a little, but it is no substitute for dental care. Dedicated dental formulas and regular check-ups are more effective.
