Grain-free dry cat food

Cats are obligate carnivores and get their energy mainly from animal protein and fat. Grain-free foods replace wheat, maize and rice with peas, sweet potato or lentils, and usually feature a higher meat content. They are a sensible choice for cats with a genuine grain sensitivity or where a lower-glycaemic diet is preferred.

That said, “grain-free” on its own is not a mark of quality. Look at the first few ingredients: named meat sources (fresh chicken, dried turkey and so on) and a high proportion of animal ingredients matter far more. Calorie density tends to be high, so measure portions carefully against the feeding table.

If your cat shows itching, chronic diarrhoea or vomiting, talk to your vet about a possible protein allergy before blaming grains. Transition over 7–10 days and watch stool quality throughout.
